Frequently Asked Questions
How does our work embody the principles of Disability Justice?
At STEP Lab, we ground our work in a strengths-based and empowerment framework that values lived experiences of individuals with disabilities. Rather than viewing disability through a deficit lens, we build on strengths, foster leadership, and collaborate closely with youth, educators, employers, and community members to ensure their voices shape our decision-making at every step.
How do we integrate Universal Design and accessibility?
Accessibility isn’t an afterthought for the work we do at STEP Lab. It’s a foundation. We use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to make our programs inclusive, flexible, adaptable, and sustainable. UDL is a framework for learning that offers flexible and adaptable environment to meet the needs of all students. From plain-language materials to accessible digital tools, we create environments where everyone can engage fully and authentically.
How do we engage the community in shaping our projects?
Our research and practice is rooted in Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach, which ensures that projects are developed with the community, not just for them. Youth, families, service providers, educators, and employers co-create, review, and guide every stage of our work. Their input directly influences our decisions and outcomes from study design to program implementation and evaluation.
How do we use our resources responsibly and equitably?
We recognize that institutional support whether through the university or funding agencies carries both privilege and responsibility. Our resources are used to empower individuals with disabilities and bridge the gap in employment opportunities, in addition to amplifying community leadership, providing fair compensation, and sustaining local capacity through employer engagement. We are committed to transparency and to ensuring our work advances equity, and not hierarchy.
How can people get involved?
There are many ways to connect with us. You can volunteer, engage in research, mentor, or be a community partner. We welcome schools, educators, students, families, employers and any other collaborators who share our commitment to inclusive employment, youth empowerment, and disability equity to reach out to us.
